Dear Congresswoman Ranka Lee:

Recently, there has been much debate over the recent Good Samaritan Law that has been proposed. However, I firmly believe that for the sake of everyone’s safety and well-being, we should definitely not implement this law.

While some believe that establishing a law that requires everyone to help those that are in need would further uphold the peace and make the nation a better place, I disagree because in reality, it is much easier said than done. This forced assistance comes with many risks to the good samaritan and the victim. The samaritan may be pulled into an extremely dangerous situation where they could get hurt as well, and also run the risk of being sued or being beguiled by a person faking that they need help. The victim may get even more hurt by half-hearted or improperly executed assistance. America is just not safe enough to establish a law like this anymore. In addition, many good people already help others out of the kindness in their hearts on a day-to-day basis. The best kind of assistance is out of moral obligation, not legal obligation.

Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to read this. I truly appreciate it, and I hope you consider my proposal.

Sincerely,

Phoebe Chan
